Aiming Shots
You can use the default keyboard controls to aim your shot appropriately. There are also a number of indicators on the user interface to take into consideration when setting up your shot.
Ball lie:
The ball lie is displayed underneath the ball. Longer clubs will increase the penalty when landing in bad lies: mulch, dirt, sand, rough, and deep rough. Different lie conditions will affect shot power and can penalize airtime, distance, spin, and control of the ball.
NOTE: You will need to add more power to compensate for the lie penalty.
The hole map:
The hole map displays the par, hole number, and top down view of the current hole. Use the arrow keys to change the direction of your golfer and the yellow trajectory arrow.
NOTE: View the yardage indicator by hovering your cursor anywhere on the map and click and drag to pan the camera to specific areas.
Shot Types
- Full - Set up a full swing
- Punch - Produce a low-trajectory shot to minimize the effects of wind, or to shoot from under tree cover.
- Pitch - Places the ball on the green with minimal roll from up to 60 yards away.
- Flop - Use it to fly over obstacles or to stick the ball on the green.
- Chip - A useful shot when you are too far away for the putter.
- Putt - Use your most accurate club-the putter-to putt the ball in the cup.
NOTE: Your club will automatically adjust as you change the distance of your target.
Club Types
- Driver - Club with the longest shot distance. Good for teeing off and getting the ball as far down the fairway as possible.
- Wood - Long-distance club that has greater loft than the driver. Good for shooting off the tee or from the fairway.
- Iron - Flat-faced club designed for shots approaching the green or from more difficult lies such as the rough or through trees. Good for the middle of each hole, including off the roughs, fairways or sand traps.
- Wedge - Iron with a higher loft for a variety of short-distance, high altitude shots. Good for chipping or placing the ball accurately on the fairway.
- Putter - Club with the shortest shot distance. Good for sinking the ball in the cup from the green.
How to Swing
Swing the club by using the traditional 3-Click option or TrueSwing. You can change the swing style by pausing the game and accessing Gameplay Settings or by pressing T in-game.
3 Click Swing
When it’s your turn to swing, start your 3-click swing by left clicking the mouse or by pressing the spacebar.
To make a complete swing:
- First Click - Left-click over the golfer or in the swing meter (or press the spacebar )to activate the power arc. As the arc rises, your swing gains power.
- Second Click (Power) - Left-click or press the spacebar again to determine your swing’s power.
- Third Click (Accuracy) - Your final click determines the accuracy of your ball’s trajectory. Time it so the power arc stops at the contact line at the bottom of the swing meter.
NOTE: Failing to stop the arc directly on the contact line can cause your golfer to hook or slice the ball.
TrueSwing
The TrueSwing option delivers the most realistic swing experience in Tiger Woods PGA Tour® Online. The velocity and pace at which you execute the swing determines the power & accuracy of the shot.
To execute a TrueSwing:
- First - Move the cursor over your golfer. When you are ready to swing, left-click the mouse.
- Second - Draw the mouse straight back in a smooth motion. Pulling the mouse further back increases the back swing, adding power to the stroke.
- Third - When your golfer has reached the peak of the backswing, push the mouse forward until the club impacts the ball.
NOTE: Movements to the left or right can cause the ball to hook or slice. When using an optical mouse, use shorter, slower motions to control your swing. The TrueSwing meter indicates your golfer’s swing in real time and displays your swing stats after your club impacts the ball.
Putting
Distance traveled with the putter depends directly on the amount of backswing and the speed of the club as it impacts the ball. When using the 3-Click swing option, the same 3-Click swing meter is used. However, when using TrueSwing, a different putting meter is displayed.
-
First - Pull the mouse back and to the yellow line to achieve the indicated power.
NOTE: Tilting your mouse left and right will affect the angle of the club face.
- Second - Push the mouse forward until the club reaches the 2D ball graphic to follow through.
NOTE: When putting, turn the grid ON (Press G) to see the break of the green. Use “Putt Previews” to see the projected putt trajectory. (Previews can be purchased at the Pro Shop)
Adding Draw or Fade
3 Click
Use the four buttons around the ball, or click and drag on the 2D ball in the lower right hand corner to add Top Spin, Back Spin, Draw, or Fade to your shot. Moving the reticle on the ball determines where you strike the ball, impart spin, and shape the shot.
TrueSwing
Fade: For a right handed golfer, pull the mouse back and to the right. When following through, push the mouse forward in a diagonal line with the mouse stopping at the upper left. This will force the ball to fade to the right. A good fade is executed when the mouse returns to the point where you began the swing.
NOTE: Under Club Path, a well-executed fade is listed as Outside-In. To slice, increase the angle of the diagonal.
Draw: To add draw, pull the mouse back and to the left and follow through in a diagonal line to the upper right.
NOTE: Under Club Path, a well-executed draw is listed as Inside-Out. To hook, increase the angle of the diagonal.
